Ted Lasso: I have only watched the first season of this so far and have not read any fic yet but I am confident enough that I am going to love it so I'm adding it to my list anyway! I really love all the character dynamics, so gen or any ship would be lovely.

Elementary:
My feelings about Elementary can basically be summed up by "I love Joan Watson", so basically anything about her is wonderful. I am especially interested in things that look at how she is different than what society expects (aro Joan, neurodivergent Joan, fics where she lets go of what people think she should do and how they think she should feel).

Leverage:
Trans!Eliot is a love of mine, but I don't know if there is a lot around. I really like existing relationship Hardison/Parker + pining Eliot and them welcoming him in. Loyalty kink/protective Eliot is very much a vibe.

I don't tend to enjoy fics where Nate is an asshole. I'm fine with ambiguously grey Nate or Nate not being present at all, though.

The Get Down:
I imagine that Zeke and Mylene get together first and then Shao starts dating Zeke after. Mylene and Shao eventually become friends and have some kind of weird and undefined relationship, but they don't date and they don't have sex with each other, just Zeke.

Star Trek:
DS9 is my favorite Star Trek right now. I love the group dynamic, people knowing each other for years, things that are much more life focused than adventure focused. Neurodivergent and/or trans characters <3. I love Sisko around children, this is my exception to my dislike of kid!fic, he just loves kids and babies so much I want to cry. On a similar note, fics looking at the relationship between Jake and Sisko (and Sisko's dad) ahhhh.

For TNG, I just like to see Data and Geordi have fun, or growing into their feelings, also "oh we've been dating for years, you didn't notice?" OR "you've been dating for years, how have you two not realized that yet"

I am very thrown off by fics that mention money. There isn't any money in the Star Trek universe anymore (okay, technically, there is in AOS, but AOS is incorrect), so talking about tuition for the academy, or work-study, or people joining Star Fleet because of poverty bothers me. Also random unexplained homophobia/racism/ableism bothers me too, especially in Star Trek fics. But speaking of the academy, I LOVE academy-era fics for any version of star trek. For AOS, I also love fics where Pike is Kirk's (reluctant) mentor.

Identifying flash players in your AO3 works

Okay, so! First things first the embedded flash players stop working 12/31/2020 (but they did not work for a lot of browsers already, so it is not such a hard deadline as that).

HOWEVER, part of this article lays out AO3's plans on some partial fixes for the broken code.

In the article, they said "We will in the near future run a process on the AO3 to find works posted using the Dewplayer plugin and automatically convert the relevant HTML to use the <audio> tag."

What might the "near future" mean? Who knows.

For those who used the Dewplayer (AO3's own embedded streaming code) instead of the podfic.com code, this doesn't necessarily mean that your links will start working again as there are two other issues (that I know of).

First the html5 audio tag needs more set up for your hosting than the flash player did. You have to allow the new player permission to reach into your hosting site and bring the audio out (approximately). If it works for you now though, it should work with the updated code.

Second the html audio tag does need the link to the mp3 file to be an "https" url not an "http" url. Basically all urls have the s now automatically but I don't know if when AO3 updates the "relevant code" if it will also include updating the url itself to add that s.

Of course in addition to that, there are still a lot of people that used podfic.com flash player instead of the dewplayer which AO3 won't be updating. And for that I have a thing! It is not a full thing, but it should be helpful.

Last month in preparation for the death of the flash player, I embarked on a project to write a script that will search through all my AO3 works, check for the code that uses the flash player, pull out the actual mp3 link, and put the link in the new html5 code for me to update.

It doesn't actually make the changes for me (which would extremely cool but I think also currently impossible? but if not, hmu bc i want to know). But it does identify exactly which podfics need updating, and formats the code for each streaming player in the work.

so you could then just copy and paste. It still takes a long time to be honest, but it might be especially helpful for people who sometimes used dewplayer and sometimes used podfic.com, because you wouldn't have to click through to check.

The end result is just a txt file with the title of the podfic, the link to the work, and the old and new version of the code, so pretty easy to work with, but the actual script is slightly less so.

It is a python script based off a modified version of alexwlchan's unofficial AO3 api, which is how I pull down the information from AO3 in order to search through it. I wrote out documentation on the code, but it is written for someone who is already familiar with python.

If this is meaningless to you but you still would like to see which works need updating, I have written it so that you can search on a different url than just your own works.

(So what I mean by that is I could potentially generate the report for you if you like, it may just be slow so that I don't stress AO3's server out.)

Honestly I am mostly excited about this code for the ~potential~ so here are some ideas for potential future work:

- Finding all the html audio tag streaming if something is not right with the way it is automatically updated by AO3

- Checking for links that only have "http://" instead of "https://" because it is currently unknown if AO3 will be updating that part of the code, and the audio tag only works with https

- Migrating your hosting to another site. You can search for the old site name and find what posts still need to be changed.

What I'm Reading Wednesday

I have been working my way through the Rivers of London series very slowly this semester. I was a bit late to the game, fandom-wise, but I will get there! So far I really like it, though I wasn't as much a fan of the audiobooks as everyone else (The narrator was too good at accents! I couldn't understand the British!), but that's a high bar to meet because everyone loves the audiobooks.

Re-introduction

As informative as my original introduction post is (/sarcasm), it would probably be useful for me to reintroduce myself.

I'm Cas, and I use the name "wingedwords" pretty much everywhere but very rarely is it my actual username. I'm on tumblr as yourgrantaire, twitter as yourgrantaire, and ao3 as gunpowderandlove. The one thing that is always consistent is my icon.

Mostly I'm a podficcer; I love, love making cover art; I very occasionally write some not-fic; and I've written fic like once.

Like everyone else I'm here because of the tumblr exodus. I usually go on tumblr when I don't have many words in me and dreamwidth is pretty much all words, so I'm not trying to make this my tumblr replacement. This might just be the motivation I need to finally start using dreamwidth.

Cover Art Template Masterlist

Introduction

I was inspired to make "blank" cover art images after reading a poll by audiofic_art. They said "If people created 'blank' podfic covers anyone could use as a base to add their texts, which themes would you find most useful?" The options were "Popular fandoms," "Moods," and "Tropes."

I love making cover art, so I decided to take up this project. Each of the covers listed below has a link to a dropbox folder with four items: an example of the cover with text, a blank version for someone to add text themselves, a psd file to edit the cover, and a txt file with sources and links to the font downloads.

There are two different ways that you can use these covers.

1. With the psd file: If you have an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.net, you can open up the psd file and edit the text that way. I have designed the templates so that you can change the text and all the effects that interact with the text (such as shadows, glow, or text direction) will change along with it.

In order for the customized version to look the same as the example, you have to download the fonts that I used. In the txt file there are links to free downloads for each font. If you open the psd file without first installing the fonts, you will get a soft error message saying that the program replaced the font with one that is already installed on your computer.

If you do not want to install new fonts or you cannot, you can still use the psd template. You will just have to click through the error message and then you can change the font to whatever you wish. Since some fonts are different sizes, you may have to fiddle with the sizes but all the effects will still work.

2. With the png file: If you use a different kind of image editor such as MS Paint, Powerpoint, or Word, then the psd file will not work. In that case, you can use the png file ending with "without words". You can use this like any photo you would as a base; just add the text like you would normally. You can also use the recommended fonts by installing them beforehand, but you would have to add the extra effects if you want to include them.
